Travel Guide: Lisbon

Spread across steep hills, Lisbon is a city brimming with culture, charm and beauty.

Top 10 Things to Do:

1.Ride a Tuk Tuk-On your first day, I would recommend to hire a Tuk Tuk to take you around the old city while you orientate yourself, especially through the cobbled streets of the famous Alfama area. Similar to Rome, Lisbon sits on seven hills and the guides know all the best viewing spots away from the crowds. We rode with Eco Tuks and our guide was excellent, very accommodating, and showed us lots of charming secret spots giving us a real flavour of the city in just two hours.

2. Visit São Jorge Castle-The view overlooking the city is unbeatable! There is also a nice restaurant on the castle grounds that have an incredible view of the city.

3. Wander in Alfama on foot for lunch at one of their many sunny street-side bars.

4. When in Alfama, you must try the Sour Cherry liquor known as Ginja. Personally I don’t like the taste of alcohol but this is so fruity and delicious that you can hardly taste the alcohol! The best part is you can have it in a white chocolate or milk chocolate shot!

5.Visit the Belém tower The city’s icon is also a symbol of the Age of Discovery. Built in the early 1500s, this ornate watchtower has been declared a World Heritage monument by UNESCO.

6. Jerónimos Monastery. The resting place of explorer Vasco da Gama is a church built in the 1500s as part of a magnificent monastery. Its cloisters are considered among the most beautiful in the world and has been listed as a World Heritage Site.

Top Tip: You can buy the tickets for the monastery at the archaeological Museum on the left and walk into the Monastery without having to queue. (The reason for the long queue is because there is only one person selling the tickets.)

7.Walk along the seafront to the Praça do Comércio (the square that was home to the Royal Ribeira Palace before it was destroyed in 1755).

Personally I think this is the best view of Lisbon
